“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.” – 2 Tim 3:16 (ESV)
Paul’s declaration is foundational: all Scripture — not the parts we prefer, not the verses that comfort us, but every word — is theopneustos, God-breathed. The Greek literally means breathed out by God, as if Scripture is the exhaled Word of the living God. This gives the Bible an authority and a vitality that no human document possesses. And it is profitable — useful, productive — in four directions: doctrine (what to believe), reproof (where we are wrong), correction (how to get right), and training in righteousness (how to stay right). These four cover every dimension of spiritual formation. A Christian who submits to all four is a Christian who is being comprehensively shaped by God’s own breath.

Do you submit to all four uses of Scripture — including reproof and correction — or do you primarily come to the Bible for comfort and doctrine while resisting its rebukes?

Prayer:
Father, Your Word is Your breath. I submit to all of it — the comforting and the convicting, the instructing and the correcting. Shape me comprehensively by what You have breathed out. I open myself to all four. Amen.
