“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” – Heb 4:12 (ESV)
The author of Hebrews makes an astonishing claim: the Word of God is alive. Not was alive when written. Is alive — present tense, ongoing. The Greek word zao means living, animated, possessing life. The Word is not a historical record of what God once said; it is the living voice of a God who is still speaking. ‘Active’ (energes — from which we get ‘energy’) means working, operative, producing effects. And the image of the two-edged sword is surgical, not violent: it penetrates to the deepest distinctions within the human person — soul and spirit, joints and marrow — and discerns what is actually in the heart. No self-examination reaches this depth. Only the Word, applied by the Spirit, can see what we cannot see about ourselves.

When did you last encounter the Word of God as genuinely alive — as something that cut, discerned, and revealed what was hidden in your heart?
What would more expectant, open-handed reading of Scripture look like?
Prayer:
Lord, Your Word is alive and I approach it today expecting it to speak, to pierce, to discern. I open my heart to whatever the sword reveals. Do not let me read it safely. Let it do its living, active work in me. Amen.
