His Inexpressible Gift

“Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!” – 2 Cor 9:15 (ESV)

Paul’s doxology erupts in the middle of a passage about financial generosity. He has been describing how the Corinthians’ giving reflects God’s generosity — and the thought of divine generosity overwhelms him into worship. The ‘inexpressible gift’ is Jesus Christ — the gift so vast that language collapses trying to describe it. The Greek word anekdiegetos means beyond description, incapable of being fully told. This is the summit of all gratitude: the gift that makes every other gift possible and meaningful. Every gift you have ever received from God — salvation, forgiveness, the Spirit, eternal life, present grace — is contained in this one inexpressible gift. When gratitude feels thin, return here: thanks be to God for Jesus.

Reflection:

When did you last pause simply to give thanks for the inexpressible gift of Jesus — not His benefits but Him, the Gift Himself?

What would pure, gift-focused gratitude for Christ look like in your prayer today?

Prayer:

Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift! Lord Jesus, You are the Gift beyond all gifts — the one I cannot fully describe or adequately thank. Receive my halting, inadequate gratitude for the gift of You. It is enough that You know I am undone by it. Amen.
