“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” – 1 Chr 16:34 (ESV)

David appoints this song when the ark of God is brought to Jerusalem — at the height of covenant celebration. The reason for gratitude is always the same in Scripture: not what God has done most recently but who God is permanently. ‘He is good’ is a statement of unchanging character, not a review of recent performance. Goodness is not what God does; it is what God is. And because His character is unchanging, the basis for gratitude is unchanging. A believer who has grasped this can give thanks in a difficult season not by pretending the difficulty is good but by declaring that the God within it is good — and that His steadfast love for them endures through every circumstance.
Reflection:
Can you say ‘He is good’ today — not as a description of your circumstances but as a declaration of God’s unchanging character?
What does it mean for you, specifically, to trust His goodness in your current season?
Prayer:
Lord, You are good. Not because my circumstances are good but because Your character is unchanging. I declare it as fact today: You are good, and Your steadfast love endures forever. That is the foundation of my gratitude. Amen.
