The Hebrew word for ‘unfolding’ (pethach) literally means the opening of a door — the moment Scripture opens and light floods in. This is the experience every genuine Bible reader knows: a passage you have read many times suddenly opens and what was previously obscure becomes luminous. This is not merely intellectual insight; it is the Spirit of God illuminating what He inspired. The promise that it ‘imparts understanding to the simple’ is democratic and generous: the formally uneducated person who opens Scripture with a humble, seeking heart receives genuine understanding. God’s Word is not the exclusive property of scholars — it unfolds its light to every simple, seeking soul that approaches it honestly.
