“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” – Rom 8:37 (ESV)
Paul’s ‘all these things’ refers to the list he has just given: tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, sword. These are not abstract possibilities — they were Paul’s biographical reality. And in all of them, he declares hypernikomen — more than conquerors. The prefix hyper takes ordinary victory and escalates it to something excessive. We do not barely survive — we decisively overcome. But the crucial phrase is ‘through him who loved us.’ The conquest is not ours by nature or effort. It is ours by participation in the victory of the One whose love has already absorbed the worst the world can do. Perseverance is not our achievement; it is our inheritance in Christ.
