“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.” – Ps 9:1 (ESV)

David pairs whole-heart thanksgiving with the recounting of God’s wonderful deeds. These are not two separate activities — the recounting is the method of the thanksgiving. When we rehearse specifically what God has done — naming the deeds, telling the stories, recalling the deliverances — the whole heart is drawn into gratitude. Vague gratitude (‘I’m thankful for my blessings’) remains in the shallows. Specific gratitude (‘I will recount all Your wonderful deeds’) plunges into the deep water of genuine encounter with a God who has acted specifically and personally in our lives. The discipline of recounting trains the heart in the habit of noticing God’s hand.
Reflection:
When did you last sit down and specifically recount God’s wonderful deeds in your life — not generically but with names and dates and details?
What would a personal ‘recounting’ look like for you today?
Prayer:
Lord, I recount Your wonderful deeds: ___. These are specific, personal, and undeniable. My whole heart gives thanks for each one. Let the recounting of what You have done be the engine of my gratitude. Amen.
