“Then he said to them, ‘Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.’” – Neh 8:10 (ESV)

Gratitude and joy are inseparable in this verse — and both overflow into generosity. When the people hear the Word and weep in conviction, Nehemiah redirects them: this is a holy day of celebration, not mourning. Send portions to those who have nothing. The joy that comes from encountering God’s grace is meant to be shared, not hoarded. The connection between gratitude and generosity is consistent throughout Scripture: a person who genuinely knows they are the recipient of grace finds it natural to give to others. Gratitude that does not produce generosity has not yet understood the depth of what has been received.
Reflection:
Is your gratitude producing generosity — a natural overflow toward others who have less?
In what specific way could thankfulness move you to send ‘portions’ to someone who has nothing ready today?
Prayer:
Lord, the joy of Your grace is my strength. Let that joy overflow into generosity — let my gratitude produce giving to those around me who have nothing ready. What I have received freely, I give freely. Amen.
