Sacrifice of Praise

“Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.” – Heb 13:15 (ESV)

The author of Hebrews calls praise a sacrifice — implying that it costs something. In seasons of joy, thanksgiving flows naturally; it requires no sacrifice. But in seasons of grief, confusion, disappointment, or exhaustion, offering thanks is a genuine act of the will that costs us our comfort and our right to wallow. The phrase ‘fruit of lips that acknowledge his name’ defines the sacrifice: lips that speak God’s name, that declare His character, that call Him good even when circumstances argue otherwise. This is the sacrificial edge of gratitude — the willingness to praise not because we feel like it but because He is worthy of it regardless of how we feel.

Reflection:

When did you last offer a genuine sacrifice of praise — thanksgiving that cost you something, offered in a season when gratitude did not come naturally?

What would that sacrifice look like in your current season?

Prayer:

Lord, I offer You a sacrifice of praise today — not because it is easy but because You are worthy. Through Jesus, I bring the fruit of lips that acknowledge Your name even in the moments when my heart wants to complain instead. Amen.
