Every Word

“But he answered, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” – Matt 4:4 (ESV)

We return to this verse in September’s context because it is the most direct statement about the necessity of God’s Word for survival. Jesus quotes Deuteronomy in response to the tempter’s suggestion that physical bread is the primary need. He does not deny hunger — He reorders the hierarchy of need. Physical bread sustains physical life; every word from God’s mouth sustains the deeper life that physical bread cannot touch. ‘Every word’ — not selected favorites, not the comfortable passages, but every word. The difficult passages, the demanding commands, the passages that challenge our theology and our comfort — all of them are the bread by which we live. A diet of only the encouraging verses produces a spiritually malnourished believer.

Lord Jesus, I choose to live by every word from Your mouth — not just the ones that comfort me. Feed me today with what I need, even if it is not what I would choose. You know what nourishes and what starves. Amen.
