According to His Will

“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.” – 1 John 5:14 (ESV)

John anchors prayer confidence in alignment with God’s will. This verse is sometimes used to inject doubt into prayer — ‘if it’s His will’ as a disclaimer that effectively empties the prayer of conviction. But that is the wrong reading. John is building confidence, not undermining it. The ‘if’ is not a probability — it is a condition that genuine prayer strives toward. As we abide in Christ and His Word abides in us, our prayers naturally become more aligned with His will. And the promise for aligned prayer is unequivocal: He hears us. The pursuit of God’s will in prayer is not a limitation on prayer; it is the secret to maximum prayer confidence.

Reflection:

How do you seek to align your prayers with God’s will — through Scripture, through waiting, through counsel?

Is ‘according to His will’ a confidence-builder or a doubt-phrase in your prayer vocabulary?

Prayer:

Father, I want my prayers to be aligned with Your will — not because I fear asking wrongly but because I trust that Your will is better than my own. Shape my desires through Your Word until my asking and Your willing become one. Amen.
