“For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.” – Heb 3:14 (ESV)
The author of Hebrews places a conditional clause on sharing in Christ that has generated significant theological discussion — not because it teaches salvation by works, but because it insists that genuine salvation produces genuine perseverance. ‘Original confidence’ (arche tes hupostaseos) is the substance, the foundational trust, the first settling of confidence in Christ. The call is to hold it firm — to not let it be diluted, replaced, or quietly abandoned. The person who begins with confident faith in Christ and holds it to the end demonstrates the genuineness of their participation in Him. The holding is not the ground of salvation; it is the evidence of it.

Lord, I hold fast my original confidence in You — firm, unashamed, and growing rather than shrinking. Let my perseverance to the end be the evidence that I have genuinely come to share in You. Amen.
