“And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” — Colossians 2:13–14 (ESV)

Before Christ, we were not merely struggling—we were spiritually dead. Paul does not soften the diagnosis. Dead in sin. Bound by a record of debt. The law of God, holy and just, testified against us. Every failure, every hidden thought, every rebellion stood as legal evidence of our guilt.
But God.
In sovereign mercy, He made us alive together with Christ. Notice the completeness: “having forgiven us all our trespasses.” Not some. Not most. All. The gospel is not partial relief; it is total pardon. The “record of debt” — a detailed account of charges — has been canceled. The word carries the idea of wiping ink from a document. The charges remain no more.
How? “Nailing it to the cross.” Our debt was not ignored; it was paid. At Calvary, Jesus bore the full weight of our legal indebtedness. The cross was not only an instrument of suffering but the place of divine justice satisfied and mercy poured out. The Son of God stood in our place so that we could stand forgiven.
If you are in Christ, there is no outstanding balance. No hidden clause. No future condemnation. You are alive, forgiven, and free. Let this truth silence the accuser and humble your heart in worship.
Reflection:
Are you still carrying guilt that Christ has already nailed to the cross? How might your daily walk change if you truly believed your debt is fully canceled?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for making me alive with Christ. Thank You that every sin has been forgiven and every charge canceled through the cross. Help me to live in the freedom of Your grace, not under the weight of past guilt. Guard my heart from unbelief, and teach me to rest in the finished work of Jesus. In His name, Amen.
