Mark 9:35 – “And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, ‘If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.’”
In the world’s eyes, greatness is measured by status, success, and recognition. But Jesus redefines greatness entirely. After the disciples argued about who was the greatest among them, Jesus didn’t rebuke them for desiring greatness—He reoriented their understanding of what it truly means.
By sitting down, the posture of a teacher in that culture, Jesus made it clear He was about to say something deeply important. His words are simple yet radical: “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” Greatness in the kingdom of God is not climbing over others, but stooping to serve them.
To be “last of all” means letting go of pride, entitlement, and the need for recognition. It means taking the posture Christ Himself took—“even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve” (Mark 10:45). Serving others is not a step down in the kingdom; it is the very way up.
Jesus doesn’t merely command servanthood—He embodies it. From washing the disciples’ feet to laying down His life on the cross, His entire mission was marked by humility and self-giving love. As followers of Christ, we are called to do the same.
Today, greatness looks like unseen faithfulness, quiet acts of kindness, forgiving when it’s hard, and choosing others’ good above our own. When we serve, we reflect the heart of Jesus—and that is true greatness.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us that true greatness is found in humility and service. Teach me to walk in Your footsteps today. Help me to value others above myself and serve with joy, even when it’s unseen. Make me more like You. Amen.
