“But he said, ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!’” – Luke 11:28 (ESV)
A woman calls out a blessing on Jesus’ mother for bearing and nursing Him. Jesus redirects the blessing: the truly blessed are those who hear God’s Word and keep it. This is not a diminishment of Mary — she is the supreme example of this very posture (‘Let it be to me according to your word’). It is a democratization of blessing: the pathway to the deep blessedness that Mary knew is open to every person who hears and keeps God’s Word. Hearing and keeping are inseparable in Jesus’ formulation. Hearing without keeping is self-deception (James calls it looking in a mirror and immediately forgetting). Keeping without hearing is impossible — obedience must be shaped by revelation.

What is the gap between your hearing and your keeping, and what would closing it require?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I want the blessing You describe — the deep blessedness of those who hear and keep. Show me where my hearing has outrun my keeping. Give me the grace to close the gap through specific, faithful obedience today. Amen.
