Confidence in prayer doesn’t come from the strength of our words or the intensity of our emotions—it flows from knowing the One to whom we pray. John assures believers that God hears us when we ask according to His will. This is not a promise that we can shape God to our desires, but rather that God invites us to align our hearts with His.
To pray “according to His will” means to seek what God desires more than what we want. It is a surrender of our plans to His purposes, a posture of trust rather than control. When our prayers reflect the heart of God—justice, mercy, holiness, love, salvation—they echo His own desires. And those are the prayers He is eager to answer.

This confidence is not presumption, but faith—a faith that God is good, wise, and sovereign. He may not answer as we expect, but He always answers in love. The cross of Christ is the proof that He hears and cares; if He did not spare His own Son, how will He not graciously give us all things (Romans 8:32)?
Let this verse encourage us not to shrink back in fear or hesitation. Bring your burdens to the Lord. Seek His will through Scripture. Pray with open hands, trusting that His answers—whether yes, no, or wait—are always for your ultimate good and His glory.
Reflection Question:
Are my prayers shaped more by my desires or by God’s revealed will in His Word?
Prayer:
Father, teach me to pray according to Your will. Align my heart with Yours. Give me confidence not in myself, but in Your goodness and faithfulness. I trust that You hear me, and that Your answers are always best. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
