Psalm 34:14 – “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.”
Psalm 34 is a psalm of deliverance and praise, written by David after a season of fear and danger. Yet in the midst of his thanksgiving, he gives this clear exhortation: “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” This is more than good advice—it’s a holy calling for the people of God.
To turn from evil is the essence of repentance. It is not just avoiding sin but turning our hearts and lives in the opposite direction—toward righteousness. Evil, in its many forms, tempts us to retaliate, to act in pride, or to seek selfish gain. But David calls us to consciously reject these ways, knowing they lead to destruction.
Instead, we are called to do good. Goodness is not passive—it’s active. It’s expressed in mercy, kindness, truthfulness, and justice. We reflect the heart of God when we live not just avoiding sin, but proactively embodying His goodness.
And then comes the charge: “Seek peace and pursue it.” This echoes Romans 14:19, showing us that peace isn’t accidental—it must be sought after and chased down. True peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it’s the presence of wholeness, reconciliation, and harmony rooted in God’s truth. And pursuing it may cost us something—our pride, our right to be right, our comfort. But the reward is far greater: the pleasure of God and the blessing of restored relationships.
Ultimately, this verse points us to Jesus Christ—the One who turned from all evil, did perfect good, and came to make peace through His blood on the cross (Colossians 1:20). As His followers, we are called to walk in His footsteps.
Reflection Questions:
- What specific evil or sin do you need to turn from today?
- In what ways can you “do good” to someone who may not expect it?
- How can you actively seek and pursue peace in your family, church, or community?
Lord, You are the God of peace and goodness. Help me to turn from every form of evil and to walk in Your ways. Teach me how to do good even when it’s difficult, and give me a heart that seeks peace—not out of convenience, but from a desire to honor You. Make me an agent of Your peace in a world that so desperately needs it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
